Melt flow index testers

Melt flow index testers are used to determine MFR (melt flow rate) and MVR (melt volume rate) of pellets, powder or fine granules according to EN ISO 1133 and ASTM D1238.

They are used for incoming goods inspection, research and development, and quality control to maintain, improve and develop the quality of the products. Depending on the purpose of the application, differently automated basic units with many options can be individually adapted to the application.

Models of melt index testers

mi1 - NEW

The new mi1 is a very compact melt flow index tester. It convinces with highest measuring accuracy using high quality measurement relevant components.

The compact space-saving design enables cost-effective incoming goods and quality control of plastics according to ISO1133 and ASTM D1238.

>>> More about the mi1

mi2.1

This basic manual mi2.1 is suitable for incoming goods inspection when only a small number of measurements are carried out.

Properties
  • ISO 1133, ASTM D1238, method B. Method A requires opt. cutting device. ASTM D3364, method C, requires special capillary.
  • Automatic measurement with individual weights (0.325 – 21.6 kg)
  • Guidance of the piston according to ISO/ASTM
  • Test temperature 0 – 400°C (opt. 500°C)
  • Colour VGA touch screen
  • Interfaces: Ethernet, serial, 1 or 2 x USB (printer, memory)

mi2.2

The mi2.2 corresponds to the melt index tester mi2.1, but has a higher operating comfort than the mi2.1 due to an automatic weight lifting device. This makes it possible to start the measurement automatically after the melting time has elapsed. After the measurement has been taken, the weights can be lifted automatically.

mi2.3

Compared to the mi2.2, the mi2.3 also has a weight magazine with up to 8 test weights. Thanks to the weight magazine, the test weights used do not have to be lifted manually onto the device.

MI-3

The MI-3 Melt Index Tester has an integrated, fully loaded weight magazine with electrical weight lifting and manual weight selection.

The instrument offers users in quality control and incoming goods inspection the possibility to automatically perform MFR or MVR measurements according to ISO 1133 and ASTM D1238 Procedure B. With an optional cutting device, the measurements can also be evaluated according to procedure A. With special capillaries, measurements can be carried out according to ASTM D1238 method C (“half-die”) or ASTM D3364.

GÖTTFERT – MI-3

  • Data backup of all parameter and measured values in case of power failure by UPS
  • Pneumatic ejector for viscous materials with 50 kg or 100 kg force

mi-40

The new generation of melt index measurement is embodied by the mi40 from GÖTTFERT. Users in incoming goods and quality control departments experience the advantage of automated and more accurate determination of MFR and MVR according to ASTM D1238 and ISO 1133.

The mi40 combines all the advantages of the MI-3 with a higher level of automation. The drive can be used for force-controlled pre-compaction or for ejecting residual material with a total force of up to 60 kg. The automatic test plan-controlled weight selection with up to nine integrated weights simplifies operation considerably. Automatic pre-compaction with weight or drive reduces the operator’s influence on the measurement result. Fully automatic multi-weight measurements with up to eight different weights per channel filling can also be carried out.

According to ISO 1133, the MFR (g/10min) is referred to as the Melt flow rate:

  • Melt-Flow Rate: MFR (designation according to ISO 1133)
  • Melt Flow Rate: MFR (designation according to ASTM D1238)
  • Melt Flow Index: MFI
  • Melt-Index: MI

Also in ISO 1133, MVR (cm³/10 min) is referred to as melt volume flow rate:

  • Melt Volume-Flow Rate: MVR (English designation according to ISO 1133)
  • Melt Volume Rate: MVR (designation according to ASTM D1238)
  • Melt Volume Index: MVI

In ISO 1133 and ASTM D1238:2013, FRR also refers to the flow rate ratio.
