Interface – Force torque transducers

We offer complete systems, from the sensor to the measuring amplifier to the evaluation software, to record and visualise stresses with 3 orthogonal force and moment directions.

Transducers

By using a force torque transducer, engineers and researchers can obtain accurate data on the forces and moments acting on a structure, helping them to assess the load-bearing capacity and integrity of the structure and identify potential problems at an early stage.

A load to be measured is divided into 6 individual signals Fx, Fy, Fz, Mx, My, Mz that are as independent as possible in the force torque transducer with the appropriate electronics. It is important to minimise crosstalk. Crosstalk occurs when a change in a measured variable has undesirable effects on other measured variables. Crosstalk is minimised on the one hand by the design of the load cell, but also by the measuring amplifier and the software, which corrects the measured values using a calibration matrix. Finally, the 6 corrected individual signals Fx to Mz are output in the graphical display of the software and at the output of the measuring amplifier.

Applications

Force torque transducers are crucial in areas where precision, control and safety are required. Their versatility makes them crucial for many industries, as they provide precise data that helps to optimise products and processes.

Typical applications are

  • Robotics: In robotics, force torque transducers are used to precisely control the interaction of robots with their environment. They help to measure and control the forces exerted by the robot arms, which is important for tasks such as assembly, polishing, grinding or automated gripping of objects.
  • Automotive industry: These sensors are used in production and assembly to ensure the correct application of forces, e.g. when screwing in bolts or assembling components. They help to ensure that assembly processes are precise and repeatable.
  • Medical technology: In medical technology, force-torque sensors are used in the development of advanced prostheses or in surgical robotic systems. They help to precisely control and monitor the interaction with the human body to ensure safety and effectiveness.
  • Aerospace: In the development and maintenance of aeroplanes and spacecraft, the accurate measurement of forces and moments is crucial to ensure structural integrity and functionality.
  • Production technology: In production monitoring, these sensors help to monitor and control forces during material processing (e.g. punching, pressing or drawing), which improves product quality and the efficiency of the production process.
  • Wind turbines: Force torque transducers can be used to monitor the loads in the components of wind turbines, which helps to increase efficiency and detect maintenance needs at an early stage.
  • Sports science and biomechanics: In sports technology, these sensors can be used to analyse the forces that occur during sporting activities in order to improve performance and prevent injuries.
  • Test and measuring devices: Force/torque sensors are also commonly used in test stands to test the mechanical properties of materials and products under various loads.

Executions

The force torque transducers from Interface measure on the basis of strain gauges that are applied to the sensor. The change in the electrical resistance of the strain gauges provides a measure of the forces and torques acting on the sensor.

In addition, there are piezoelectric sensors for highly dynamic applications and capacitive sensors that are strong at low forces.
