Strain gauge load cells
The applied force elastically deforms the spring body of the transducer. Strain gauges, which are bonded to the elastic body, change their resistance when the body deforms. The electrical resistance change is recorded and digitised via a measuring amplifier. Due to the elastic properties of the body metal, this signal can be converted into a force signal. Calibration of the transducer and the amplifier is required for correct conversion of the deformation into a force.
The force signal is set to zero before a measurement. Just like a household scale. The load cell is now ready to measure the change in force compared to the zero point.
