Determination of the hardness of moulded foams
ISO 2439
Indentation hardness is crucial for the quality of moulded foams in products such as vehicle seats and mattresses. In materials testing, this method is standardised in accordance with ISO 2439 and ASTM D 3574. It is similar to a hardness measurement in which an indenter is pressed into a larger surface and the required force is measured. Pre-loading cycles break up cells and bring the foam into a defined state, followed by a measuring cycle. The results are represented by force values after defined holding times. The measured value of this method is dimension-independent and is well suited for quality assurance.
Carrying out the experiment
Method
According to ISO 2439, the 380 mm x 380 mm x 50 mm test piece is pressed together on a horizontal plate with holes of 6 mm diameter at a distance of 20 mm with an indenter of 200 mm diameter.
Equipment
- Testing machine AGS-X 100kN
- TrapeziumX-V software, “Control” module
- Rigidly mounted, square, perforated printing plate at the bottom (400x400mm)
- Spherically mounted, round top pressure plate, D=200mm
