GÖTTFERT – Viscosity measurements with an MFI device
With the “visco” add-on, the mi40 visco can perform viscosity measurements in accordance with ISO 11443, the standard for capillary rheometers.
The simple operation of the melt indexer is combined with the functions of a capillary rheometer. This means that viscosity can be used as a quality criterion cost-effectively and without a great deal of time or training.
Melt index and viscosity on the same device?
Two batches of the same material: Material 1 causes problems during injection molding, while material 2 can be processed without any problems.
A simple MVR test during the incoming goods inspection shows no anomalies – both batches meet the specifications.
Only a test with a capillary rheometer over a wide shear rate range shows differences: Material 1 has a significantly higher viscosity at high shear rates, which explains the problems in the processing procedure.
This property is not recognized by simple MVR tests.
The mi40 visco can directly measure viscosity at high shear rates with the “viscosity measurement” add-on. The proven ease of use of the melt indexer is combined with the extended material characterization capabilities of a capillary rheometer. With this new option, it is possible to consider viscosity as a QA criterion without excessive investment in time, training and money.
Important properties
- Melt index and viscosity measurement with one device
- QA inspection for the processability of plastics
- Quick and easy viscosity measurements according to ISO 11443
- Up to 10 apparent shear rates with one filling of the cylinder
- Material characterization at higher, process-relevant shear rates
- Viscosity test at the usually specified apparent shear rate of 1000 1/s
- Lower costs and easier handling than with normal capillary rheometers
